Kieron Morris keen to seize his chance at Walsall

Kieron Morris admits he is ready to fight to stay in Walsall's starting line-up after making a goalscoring return against Peterborough.

The 22-year-old started for the first time in eight matches on Saturday as the Saddlers ran out 2-0 winners over Grant McCann's side.

Morris was restored to the team after Florent Cuvelier was ruled out for up to six weeks with a calf injury.

And after patiently waiting for an opportunity, the Hereford-born star is now determined to keep his place.

"When I was out the team I knew I had to bide my time and be patient," Morris said. "I have been working hard in training and I knew when I got a chance I had to take it. I felt I did that against Peterborough but now I've got to keep going.

"I feel for Flo. He's a great lad and he took his chance when I got injured and I couldn't argue with that.

"If you are out the team and players are playing really well there is not a lot you can do – you have to be patient.

"Now I've got my chance and I know I now have to keep performing."

Morris initially saw his season hampered at the end of November when he picked up a foot injury.

But while he came back into the team for the defeat to Rochdale on January 2, he admits the injury was still affecting his game.

"I got injured to begin with and came back for two games but I still wasn't quite right," he continued.

"Then after that I was on the bench for quite a lot of games because our form has been great recently.

"But I knew the important thing was to make sure I was always ready.

"Someone can pick up an injury at any point. And because of the work I had done I felt good going into Peterborough.

"Then to get a goal in my first game back, I was delighted.

"It will take time to get that full match fitness back. But I thought I played well."

Traditionally a winger, Morris was deployed in central midfield against Peterborough with the Saddlers now settled in their 3-5-2 formation.

But it's a role the former Wrexham loanee enjoys.

"I do like it," Morris added. "You get a lot of the ball in there and it allows you to see more passes and break lines as well so it's good."
