Paul Downing: Small squad helps Walsall
Defender Paul Downing believes having a small squad has helped Walsall in their bid to win promotion from League One.
The Saddlers currently sit fourth in the table having used just 21 players – the least out of all 24 teams in the division.
Peterborough lead the way have used 38 closely followed by Oldham and Swindon, who have both deployed 35.
League One leaders Burton have used the second least on 23 and Downing believes it's no coincidence those two teams are right in the promotion mix.
He said: "To use such a small amount of players has been a good thing for us. It has kept us together and I think everyone has seen the team spirit that exists in the group.
"With a small squad, you have to take responsibility for yourself to ensure you stay in tip-top shape."
Downing got to renew his defensive partnership with James O'Connor as the Saddlers played out a goalless draw with Nigel Clough's Burton on Saturday.
O'Connor missed the Saddlers last two games with a thigh injury with Matt Preston impressing in his absence.
And Downing admitted it was good to have the former Derby County stopper back, even if he did feel Preston was unlucky to miss out.
He said: "I have played a lot of seasons with Jimmy and we have a good relationship, but Matty Preston was unfortunate to be dropped.
"At Crewe, we dominated the game and Wigan scored two goals from outside the area, but Jimmy brings with him great experience."
Boss Sean O'Driscoll was also pleased to see O'Connor return, adding: "Paul and Jimmy have played together all season and as soon as Jimmy was fit, he was going to come straight back in."
