Sean O'Driscoll keen to add aerial power to Walsall squad

One of the main talking points amongst Saddlers fans has been whether the team needs a more physical frontman to ease the pressure on Tom Bradshaw.

And while O'Driscoll is keen to ensure Walsall continue to play a possession-based game – he feels the team could benefit from a player who carries a greater aerial threat.

"If you are banging the ball forward to someone in the air – people say you are not playing football and you are not doing this and not doing that," the head coach said.

"But what you want in the squad is a balance of everything.

"When you look at the squad we have got lots of ball players. But we haven't really got someone whose strength is the physical aspect of the game in both boxes.

"That is something that would probably be a good addition to the squad."

One player who is on O'Driscoll's radar is Manchester City defender Ellis Plummer who featured for Walsall's reserves against Wigan on Tuesday.

A left-footed centre-half, Plummer initially had a trial with the Saddlers in October but it was cut short when the former England Under-17 international picked up an injury.

And after playing well for the second string, O'Driscoll confirmed he could be a player he turns to this season or in the future. "Ellis is somebody who has been at the club before but got injured," he said.

"We invited him back because we had some good reports.

"He was willing to come back and play in a game so we took that opportunity and he did well.

"He is a left-sided centre-back and when you look at the balance of the squad – we are not blessed with a left-sided centre-back. He would balance the team out.

"But we have got to have one eye on now and one eye on the future.

"Whether we bring him in now or not, I'm not sure. Loans are difficult because everyone wants to play and at this moment we couldn't guarantee anyone a place. That puts players off."
