The Saddlers supremo, who was appointed to the role in January 2011, is now the third longest serving manager in the club's history behind Alan Buckley and Billy Moore.

"I feel very proud," Smith said on reaching the landmark.

"It shows a level of commitment from the football club and a level of commitment from myself towards a project to try and help the football club climb through the leagues.

"League One is a very tough league to get out of but we're trying to get into the Championship.

"Only three Walsall managers have got us into the Championship and I want to be the fourth.

"We know how hard it's going to be but I'm pleased with the progress the football club is making."

Tonight, Smith goes toe-to-toe with Iron boss Mark Robins, who played for Walsall between 1999 and 2000.

"He'll be wanting to get one over us but we'll take an awful lot of belief out of the performances we've been putting in," he added.
