A brilliant Rico Henry goal mid-way through the first half was enough for the Saddlers to claim a 1-0 win at Glanford Park.

The result means Smith's side remain unbeaten on their travels in League One this season with Smith pleased to mark his landmark anniversary with three points.

He said: "I didn't realise it was my 250th game until I was told on Monday. It has gone really quickly.

"But it was great we could get a win to mark the occasion and hopefully we can go get another one at Wigan."

After dominating the opening 45 minutes, Walsall had to dig deep in the second half to protect their one goal advantage with Smith thrilled with his player's organisation and resilience.

The manager said: "That was one of my most pleasing results of the season in terms of performance, discipline and doggedness – which is not a word you associate with our team much."

Smith was also chuffed with Henry's goal after the 18-year-old finished more like a striker than a left-back, adding: "He is a great kid.

"He is enjoyable to work with and just gets on and does his job."

Meanwhile, Sam Mantom and Romaine Sawyers are both amongst 11 nominees shortlisted for the PFA Fans' Player of the Month award.
