A super Tom Bradshaw hat-trick handed Walsall a thrilling last-gasp Capital One Cup win as they maintained their magical hoodoo over Nottingham Forest.

Bradshaw converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to seal the most dramatic of 4-3 wins after two late strikes from Forest substitute Michail Antonio looked to have taken the tie to extra-time.

The Saddlers led 2-0 thanks to Bradshaw's quickfire first-half brace and Romaine Sawyers restored their two-goal advantage after Tyler Walker had netted for Forest.

Antonio struck on 81 and 90 minutes to make it 3-3 but Bradshaw kept his nerve from the spot to extend the Saddlers' unbeaten record over Forest to 12 games and 15 years and secure their place in round two.

Walsall made a crisp, positive start but they survived an early scare when Tyler Walker found some space on the Forest right and crossed for Jamie Ward, who sent a difficult chance over the bar.

It was all Walsall, however, and they went ahead in some style on 12 minutes as they stunned Forest with a moment of quality.

An impressive change of pace took Milan Lalkovic past Eric Lichaj in the Forest right-back berth and his cross found its way to the far post, where Bradshaw could not believe his luck as he arrived unmarked to convert a tap-in.

Just two minutes later it got even better for the Saddlers as Bradshaw added his second goal from a similar range.

Forest (4-3-1-2): De Vries; Lichaj, Hobbs, Wilson, Fox; Vaughan, Mancienne; C Burke (O Burke, 78); Paterson (Blackstock, 71); Ward (Antonio, 78); Walker.

Subs not used: Mills, Lansbury, Grant, Evtimov (gk).

Walsall (4-3-3): Etheridge 6; Demetriou 6, O'Connor 7, Downing 7, Henry 6; Mantom 6, Chambers 6 (Sawyers, 55, 7), Flanagan 6, Morris 6 (Cook, 85), Bradshaw 9, Lalkovic 8 (Forde, 74).

Subs not used: Baxendale, Preston, Kinsella, MacGillivray (gk).

There was a suspicion of a touch by former Saddlers defender Danny Fox on the line as Bradshaw bundled home following a clever pass from Rico Henry and a darting run and cross from the left by Sam Mantom.

Ward then tried his luck from distance after darting in from the left following a useful Forest passing move.

Forest finally began to gain some traction but the Saddlers carved out another shooting chance with a clever passing move that ended with Bradshaw teeing up Kieron Morris.

But the youngster dragged his shot from the edge of the area well wide and Forest broke almost immediately to reduce the arrears.

Saddlers old-boy Jamie Paterson wriggled free of defenders and crossed from the right, and Walker, son of Forest legend and England old-boy Des, was on hand to convert at the far post for a goal on his full debut.

The final 15 minutes of the opening half saw Forest lay siege to the Saddlers goal but the visitors escaped their own half notably on one occasion as Lalkovic skipped through two challenges in the home side's penalty area and was denied by a smart save from Dorus De Vries.

Forest then piled pressure on Walsall's goal and were denied by the woodwork in stoppage time as Walsall half-cleared a corner and Paterson's effort from the edge of the box cannoned back off Neil Etheridge's right-hand upright.

It was a welcome let-off for the Saddlers as they survived a Forest onslaught late in the half, but overall Smith's men were good value for their half-time advantage.

Forest made a positive start to the second half and Walsall suffered a blow when captain Adam Chambers went down injured soon after the restart.

The midfielder tried to carry on but had to concede defeat and was replaced by Romaine Sawyers.

While Chambers was struggling, Paterson again let fly with a powerful effort from 20 yards, but this time his shot fizzed just over the crossbar.

Sawyers was in the action almost immediately as he played his part in a clever interchange of passes on the edge of the Forest area and then tried to apply the finishing touch from long range.

But the substitute's effort from 20 yards dipped over.

Paterson continued to look like the biggest threat to his former employers and he had another chance when some smart movement inside the penalty area gave him a sight of goal, but he blasted into the side netting from a tricky angle.

The Saddlers began to flag in the final stages but they remained impressively disciplined as they looked to close out victory.

And they looked to have wrapped up victory on 80 minutes when Kieron Morris's shot was parried by De Vries, Bradshaw took an air shot and the ball dropped for Sawyers to make it 3-1.

But just a minute later Forest were within one goal again as substitute Antonio drove through the middle and rattled a 25-yard screamer into the top corner.

And they looked to have ensured extra-time when Antonio netted his second with a cheeky backheel in a frantic goalmouth scramble.

But in the fifth minute of stoppage-time Bradshaw burst into the box and was tripped by Wilson before dusting himself down to convert the penalty and send the 669 travelling Saddlers fans into ecstasy.
