Tributes pour in for former Saddler star Geoff Morris

Tributes have been paid to former Walsall winger Geoff Morris, who has died aged 66.

Morris scored 41 goals in 201 appearances during a nine-year stay at Fellows Park, having joined the Saddlers aged 15 in 1964.

He made history in September 1965 when he became the club's youngest ever player aged 16 and 218 days.

Though the record would later be broken by David McDermott when he faced Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup in 2004, Morris remains the club's youngest player in a league game.

After leaving the Saddlers in 1973, he went on to play for Shrewsbury Town, Port Vale and Kidderminster Harriers but former team-mate Mick Evans believes he might have made it to the top but for suffering from asthma.

"I think that stopped him making it right up there," said Evans, who joined the club only months before Morris.

"Quite a few teams had a look at him, the likes of Tottenham but he did suffer with asthma a bit."

Morris actually finished as the club's top scorer for the 1971/72 season with 12 goals but Evans believes his finest hour occurred the season before, when he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Villa.
