The now Sky Sports pundit spoke at length about his time as a top-flight footballer to a packed sporting dinner at the Banks's Stadium last night.

Famous for his almost impeccable record from the penalty spot, the technically-gifted midfielder spent his whole career with Southampton.

He won the Professional Footballers Association's Young Player of the Year award in 1990 and went on to earn eight caps for his country.

Saddlers chief executive Stefan Gamble said: "It was an honour to have Matt here.

"We had Jimmy Greaves with us last week, so it's great to have welcomed another former England star to the Banks's Stadium this week as part of our extensive Christmas events programme."
