The 1-0 Area quarter-final victory at the Banks's Stadium in front of the Sky Sports cameras has left the Saddlers two rounds away from a first-ever Wembley appearance.

And Smith revealed he urged his players to go out and grasp their opportunity to make club history before last night's game.

"It's whet the appetite of the supporters, the players and the whole club," he said.

"It's a great opportunity for everyone and that is what I said to the players, to go and take opportunities when they are there.

"It is there for us. We have just got to make sure our performance levels are right."

He went on: "I said to the players who went out there, players in the lower leagues very rarely get the chance to go and win cup competitions and this is one you can go and win.

"We have had two really tough games already in two in-form teams in Rochdale away and Sheffield United and we have managed to get to the Area semi-final.

"It is tough to get there but we are going to try and get there. Football is about momentum and getting a winning feeling. We have won three out of the last four and want that to continue. I'm not fed up about constantly reminded the club has never got to Wembley but it's probably disconcerting we haven't been there, there are some good teams left in that draw."

Romaine Sawyers scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes into the second half, though his header did take a deflection in off Blades skipper Michael Doyle. The visitors were then denied what appeared a blatant penalty when Chris Porter appeared to be tripped up by Saddlers keeper Richard O'Donnell.

Smith felt his side were lucky to get away with that decision but added: "I felt we deserved to win it. I thought we were excellent, the only concern was we hadn't put the tie to bed. While it is 1-0 there are always anxious moments."

Tom Bradshaw will be assessed today after leaving the game at half-time with a tight hamstring.
