Manager Dean Smith today admitted Walsall now face a "massive test" to shake the after-effects of their Rochdale hammering.

After hauling his squad in on their day off yesterday for a post-mortem of Tuesday's shocking 4-0 reverse, Smith has turned his attentions to Saturday's trip to Gillingham.

The manager will demand a reaction after branding the performance as "unacceptable" but knows the nature of the loss could have a serious impact on morale.

He said: "Results like that can linger and that is why we have had them in yesterday to make sure we get it out of our system.

"It was very unlike us and I am going to have to do something about it.

"Results like that can be demoralising. I have always said throughout my managerial career it is how you react to things.

"There is frustration and disappointment, particularly after how well we did against Preston on Saturday but it was atrocious defending for their goals.

"It is not an exaggeration to say it could have been double figures on Tuesday. Paul Downing got tortured out there.

"It's a massive test and it always is, it's a test every week. Whether the players thought they could just go to Rochdale and get a win after Saturday. It is something we will discuss."

Skipper Adam Chambers and top scorer Tom Bradshaw, who both missed the game through injury, are doubtful for the trip to Kent with an ankle sprain and tight hamstring respectively.

"Whether they will be ready for Saturday I am not sure," added Smith. "That is something we will have to look at over the next few days.

Meanwhile, former Saddlers winger Febian Brandy has joined Crewe Alexandra from Rotherham on a one-month emergency loan deal.
