The defender, who signed a one-year deal at the Banks's Stadium last month, is desperate to put a nightmare 12 months behind him.

O'Connor made just four appearances in the entire 2012/13 campaign after suffering a serious thigh injury while on loan at Bristol City from Derby County.

Now with the Saddlers after been released from Pride Park, Birmingham born O'Connor admits he just wants to get back on track.

"It's been a frustrating 12 or 18 months for me," he said. "Firstly being out of favour at Derby and then getting the injury I had while I was out on loan at Bristol.

"It was the first serious injury I have ever had in my career but I have worked hard to come back from it and I feel really good. "

O'Connor, who began his career at Villa and even played alongside Saddlers boss Dean Smith while at Port Vale, is set to be the only new face on the defensive line having been brought in following the departure of Andy Butler.

But he is not being viewed as a direct replacement for the former skipper, with Smith viewing his ability to play both as a centre-back and full-back as an asset. O'Connor says he is happy to play wherever he is needed.

"When I was young I used to think it hampered me – playing different positions," he said. "Looking back I think it has helped me at certain times. "

Walsall have announced details of their latest open training session which takes place on Monday, August 4, five days before the start of the new League One season.

Gates at the Bank's Stadium open at 10.30am and entry to the event is free.
