Walsall have been handed an early Christmas present with the news Craig Westcarr should be fit for the Boxing Day trip to Bristol City.

The Saddlers top scorer limped out of Saturday's 2-0 win over Carlisle United with a dead leg but manager Dean Smith expects the striker to have recovered in time for the visit to Ashton Gate.

Smith has also backed Nicky Featherstone to fill the void left in midfield by Adam Chambers, who will be absent for the first time this season after picking up his fifth booking of the season.

Featherstone has started 13 games for the Saddlers this term but has been used almost exclusively in a three-man central midfield alongside Chambers and Sam Mantom.

But Smith is confident the 24-year-old will be able to pick up the slack.

"It gives people a chance to come in," said Smith. "Adam had a tight Achilles as well against Carlisle so we replaced him with ten minutes to go.

"We've got an able replacement in Nicky so that's not a problem for us.

"As good as Adam is, Nicky has been unfortunate not to be in the team at the moment."

Smith's side will be looking to make it three league wins on the bounce against City, who currently sit rock bottom of League One.

And while the Saddlers boss is approaching the game with confidence, he insists his players won't be complacent.

"However Bristol City are doing in the league at the moment it's going to be a tough place to go because Ashton Gate always is," he said.

"They are under new management and that means players will be looking to impress but we have had back-to-back victories and there is no reason we can't go there and put in a performance.

"If we play better than we did on Saturday we have every chance of getting the right result."
