The 23-year-old, who was released by the Loftus Road club at the end of last season, has penned a one-year deal at the Banks's.

He becomes the Saddlers third striker signing of the day, following Craig Westcarr's decision to re-sign and the capture of Chelsea's Milan Lalkovic on loan.

Hewitt, who began his career in non-league football at Harrow Borough, has spent pre-season on trial at the Saddlers and accompanied the club on their recent tour of Trinidad and Tobago.

Boss Dean Smith says he first spotted Hewitt when he played against Walsall during a loan spell at Bury last swason.

"I've spoken to a few people about him and had some very good feedback," said Smith.

"He's a lad who has come through the non-League system to earn his chance in the professional game.

"He's been with us since the start of pre-season and has displayed a tremendous attitude and work ethic.

"He wants to do well and play at the highest level possible.

"I feel that he will lead the line well and score goals; his hold-up and link-up play is very good and he has plenty of pace, so he has some key strengths that I am sure will serve us well."

Hewitt's time at Loftus Road also included loan spells at Dagenham and Redbridge and Colchester United.

"I've been made to feel really welcome here right from day one," added Hewitt.

"There are some good, young players here and I have fitted in well.

"It's a nice set-up; going out to Trinidad & Tobago was really beneficial for me as it helped me bond straight away with the rest of the lads and get to know what the gaffer expects.

"I just want to do my best and score some goals to help the club progress."
