Craig Westcarr near a call on his future at Walsall

Striker Craig Westcarr expects to make a decision by the end of this week on whether to stay at Walsall.

The 28-year-old has been out of contract since the end of last season but played in a Walsall side at Halesowen Town last night.

It also featured former West Brom youngsters Romaine Sawyers and Shane Lewis along with fellow trialists James McQuilkin, Jordan Ball and Joel Purkiss.

Westcarr, who has already turned down one new deal to stay at the Banks's, will now meet with Saddlers boss Dean Smith in an attempt to thrash out his future.

But he has hinted he will only sign if the money is right. The forward was one of the unsung heroes of Walsall's excellent late-season form after signing from Chesterfield in January.

Smith has made no secret of his desire to keep Westcarr and the Saddlers are currently short on the forward line following the departures of Febian Brandy, Will Grigg and Jamie Paterson.

Westcarr is now waiting to hear what Smith has to say before deciding his next move. "It's up to the manager really and what he offers.

"At the minute, I am here training but I have got to sit down with the manager. I would like to stay.

"Hopefully, we can sort things out sooner rather than later – you can't stick around for too long.

"I just need to wait for the manager so we can sit down and try to sort something out this week, or that's it probably."

The Saddlers first-team squad arrived back in Britain this morning from their pre-season Caribbean tour.

Academy boss Neil Woods took charge of last night's team at the Grove, which featured several free agents hoping to force their way into Smith's plans.

Striker Sawyers made four substitute appearances for the Saddlers during a loan spell at the end of the campaign.

He was then released by West Brom at the start of the summer, along with 20-year-old Lewis.

Teenage forward Ball, who scored, was let go by League One champions Doncaster and 24-year-old midfielder McQuilkin was previously at Hereford.
