Craig Westcarr is egg-excited to go to Swindon

The Saddlers' soldiers have beaten off the doubters and now comes the time where the race reaches boiling point.

A win tomorrow would deny the third place Robins a shot at top spot under new boss and ex-Saddlers midfielder Kevin MacDonald and keep eighth-placed Walsall in the play-off hunt.

And Westcarr believes the Saddlers have a chance to crack the Robins' own challenge and jump from the frying pan into the promotion fire.

He scored the clinching goal in Chesterfield's 2-0 Johnstone's Paint Trophy final win against the Robins at Wembley last season and wants to leave them shell-shocked again.

He said: "I'll get some stick off their fans, I've been getting some in the last couple of weeks on Twitter from them so it'll be interesting.

"I'm looking forward to it. I scored against them for Chesterfield last year and I had an incident where me and one of their guys had a bit of a scuffle.

"So the fans have been giving me some rubbish banter and they have been saying 'we can't wait until you come, we're going to egg you'.

"I'll be dodging rotten eggs from Swindon fans! But it'll be a good test for us to show how far we've come.

"Swindon are in a bit of transition where everyone is a bit wary so we're looking forward to it. It's definitely a huge game for them."

The 28-year-old is looking to fire the Saddlers into the play-offs after his first goal for the club in last Saturday's 3-1 derby win over Shrewsbury.

It ended a run of 15 games without a goal – for both Walsall and Chesterfield – stretching back to November.

And Westcarr admitted he needed time to get up to speed after being frozen out at the Spireites when his initial Walsall loan spell ended in January.

He said: "I think people thought I should have been up and running straight away but before I signed here on loan I wasn't playing for months.

"After my loan ended I didn't play for another month so it's hard to get back in to keep fit. You need games. Everyone is flying as well and it's hard to get going.

"I've stayed behind and worked hard and I'm up to speed. You have to put the extra hours in when you're not playing.

"I'm up at the end of the season and I have to work as hard as I can to get a new contract. I have to work hard every day, even when I get a day off, to keep going and look after myself."

The Saddlers could close the gap to the play-offs to two points if they win and Bournemouth and sixth placed Tranmere lose ahead of Rovers' visit on Tuesday.

They are missing Richard Taundry who is not match fit after an ankle injury and are expected to be unch-anged from their Shrewsbury win.

But Westcarr insisted the double header should not define their season with games against fellow top six hopefuls Sheffield United, Yeovil and Coventry yet to come.

He said: "It's not make or break at the moment. There's no do or die chat yet. There are 10 games to go and we've got the points on the board and teams need to get points. We're enjoying it as well so it's good.

"When teams do play us they get a surprise because we're really good."
