Andy Butler wants to stay at Walsall if he's wanted

Walsall captain Andy Butler today pledged his future to the club – if the Saddlers want to keep him.

The skipper is out of contract at the end of the season and revealed he wants to stay at the Banks's Stadium.

Butler regrets leaving Scunthorpe for Huddersfield in 2008 and credits the Saddlers for resurrecting his career after he was left on the scrapheap by the Terriers when they released him in 2010.

It means he is happy to wait for talks but the 29-year-old wants to re-sign for Dean Smith's red revolution as they chase the League One play-offs.

"I do enjoy it here – I'm not going to lie – and I would like to stay," he said, with Walsall eighth ahead of Saturday's crucial trip to promotion rivals Swindon.

"It's enjoyable to be here. The gaffer has turned the club round – from where we were when he took over to where we are now is a complete turnaround.

"It's a great place to be. Everyone is friends, there are no horrible people, everyone is here to improve and that's what we're doing.

"I've not heard anything yet. We've not sat down yet but it's up to the gaffer when he does it. I'm not in a rush and I'm enjoying my time here. I do like it here, they brought my career back and I like the gaffer, he's great.

"We've still got three or four months left of the contract so there's plenty of time. I've said before I left Scunny when I should have stayed there so waiting is not a weight on my mind."

Butler has made 119 appearances, scoring, 12 goals since signing on a free transfer in November 2010.

He has won successive player of the season awards and helped the Saddlers to two successful relegation fights, including the Great Escape in 2011.

The club are still in talks with several players after Nicky Featherstone became the fifth man to sign fresh terms this year after penning an 18-month deal on Tuesday.

Boss Smith is already building for next season as the Saddlers eye a shock play-off spot with 10 games left.

Paul Downing, James Baxendale, Mal Benning and Andy Taylor have all penned contracts this year.
