Jeff Bonser 'still right behind Walsall FC'

Stefan Gamble today insisted Jeff Bonser's commitment to Walsall remains as strong as ever and the under -fire chairman pours his "heart and soul" into the club.

The chief executive has allayed any fears the chairman has lost interest in the Saddlers after a self-imposed absence.

Bonser has not attended a home first-team fixture in almost three seasons after fierce criticism from fans over his lack of communication and the rent the Saddlers pay on their facilities.

He wants to sell the club after 20 years in charge after failing to find a buyer for the freehold last year.

Bonser continues to be heavily involved in the day-to-day running of the club and, while he remains chairman, Gamble said he will support the Saddlers.

He said: "Jeff's heart and soul is still in the club. He still wants the club to do well as he always has done.

"That's why he got involved in the first place – that hasn't changed and it never will."

Bonser made a personal plea to Walsall Council to buy the freehold last year and there is an open invitation for potential buyers to discuss any deal for the club.

But Gamble reiterated the chairman will only sell if the right buyer comes along.

He said: "The club is for sale, as it has been for some time. The chairman has made it pretty clear he is happy to sit down with anyone as long as they can prove there are unencumbered funds to follow through but, importantly, that they have the interests of the club at heart."

And Gamble has also backed the Saddlers to end their 14-game winless run which has seen them slip to 19th in League One.

He admits the streak is a worry but is expecting the side, who go to Coventry on Saturday, to turn the tide.

He said: "The fact we haven't won for 14 games is an immediate concern. We're in a rut at the moment but generally the performances are still decent and we're making chances. It will come right."
