Walsall striker Jon Macken today faced a late fitness fight to play Bournemouth after twisting his ankle in training.

The two-goal hitman turned his ankle yesterday and is a doubt for Saturday's League One trip to the Cherries.

Macken has been one of the star performers in the Saddlers' early season and manager Dean Smith hopes he will be ready for the Dean Court clash.

The Saddlers boss said: "We've got a slight doubt with Jon, he's just turned his ankle in training but hopefully he will be alright.

"He scores some great goals, he's got one this season which will already be in the goal of the season compilation.

"He's done well and scored a good goal last week, he and Will Grigg have looked bright together.

"They've set a standard everyone has to get to. The attitude of the players has been fantastic and you'll go a long way if you've got a good attitude."

Grigg and Macken have scored three goals between them but Smith insisted Ryan Jarvis will be ready if needed.

The summer signing from Leyton Orient scored in the reserves' 2-1 win over Stoke yesterday.

Smith said: "He did really well yesterday, it was more of the Jarvis I've seen before.

"He looks sharper, brighter and led the line really well."
