Walsall manager Dean Smith has thrown down the gauntlet to Saddlers hot-shot Ryan Jarvis and told him – 'prove your worth.'

The Saddlers boss reckons his new striker can revive his career at the Banks's Stadium but warned he must not blow the chance.

Jarvis signed a one-year deal after being released by Leyton Orient in the summer, after a stop-start three years at Brisbane Road.

Smith, in Stirling on the Saddlers' Scottish training camp, worked with the former Norwich striker at the Os and wants Jarvis to hit the goal trail.

The manager said: "I still see things I'd like to work on with him and he knows this is a big chance for him – one he's got to take and he's got to score goals.

"His overall game is very good but what he hasn't been doing is scoring consistently over the years and that's something he has to improve on. I believe he can do it.

"He's a good all-round player but he's still in this league because he hasn't scored consistently enough.

"That's what he needs to do if he wants to go higher."
