Bobby Davison applies for Walsall job
Former Ferencvaros boss Bobby Davison today revealed he has applied for the Walsall job.
Former Ferencvaros boss Bobby Davison today revealed he has applied for the Walsall job.
The former Derby and Leeds star confirmed to the Express & Star he wants to succeed axed boss Chris Hutchings.
The Saddlers sacked Hutchings yesterday with the club bottom of League One, eight points from safety.
Davison is currently part of the England Under-19 set up after leaving the Hungarian giants in 2009 following a successful spell.
And the 51-year-old believes his time abroad sets him apart from other candidates.
"There will be different candidates and we'll all have contacts within the game but what makes me a little different is I have European experience and have contacts right across Europe," he said.
"Walsall are in between four big clubs and there's plenty of scope. It's a job that excites me.
"Jobs come up when the club isn't doing well, it's not often they do when a club is, but I will be throwing my hat into the ring.
"I like to manage the way I played. I like to play exciting football, you've got to have that excitement for the crowd."
Davison started his playing career at Huddersfield before moving to Halifax and Derby – where he made over 200 appearances between 1982 and 1987.
Spells at Leeds, Leicester, Sheffield United and Rotherham followed before he retired in 1995.
In 2008 he was appointed as an advisory coach to Ferencvaros as part of Sheffield United's link with the Hungarian outfit.
He replaced Janos Csank as boss soon after and guided the team to promotion back to the Hungarian top-flight before being sacked in 2009 and succeeded by Craig Short.
Davison added: "I managed a massive club in Hungary when they were down in the doldrums.
"They had a big fanbase and a big reputation but I went there and turned it round and got them promoted by winning the title by 17 points."
