From the factory floor to the FA Cup: Why Stourbridge skipper Tom Tonks is a real life Glassboy

On weekdays you will find Tom Tonks at the factory, making parts for windows. But on Saturday afternoons he goes off to captain Stourbridge FC - he's a Glassboy in more ways than one.

And this season, Tom and his fellow amateurs have been making headlines achieving what few non-league teams do.

This weekend he will lead the side out for one of the biggest occasions in their history - the third round of the FA Cup.

The cup run and upcoming match against Wycombe Wanderers has captured the imagination of the whole town.

The midfielder admits he has been getting more attention than usual on the day job at CWG Choices in Aldridge, which makes handles, hinges and other parts for windows and doors.

Tom's job is to look after the stock and make sure parts are available

Tom, whose goal from just inside the half-way line in the FA Cup first qualifying round in September went viral on social media, said: "People have been coming up to me, there has been a bit more recognition, saying they have seen me on the telly or read about it in the paper and that they hope we will do it.

"One of the lads came to the Northampton game and said he would come again if we were at home."

Tom, from Walsall, was previously a postman but when it became clear he would no longer have Saturdays free, he chose deliveries into the penalty box over deliveries into the mailbox.

"They told me I would have to work until 1pm on Saturday afternoons so that was it," he said.

"The manager here is a football fan so he has been really understanding if I have to leave early for a night match. I will miss Friday as the coach leaves for Wycombe. They have been really good."

Hard at work

The 25-year-old has already began dreaming of who could be up next if the Glassboys can make it past League Two side Wycombe.

A lifelong Wolves fan, he said a game at Molineux would top everything else.

But he admitted it would be surreal to line up against Premier League millionaires.

Tom, who has also played for Halesowen Town, said: "The number one choice would be to play Wolves at Molineux but if not everybody would be wishing for one of the big boys from the Premier League.

"Some people have asked what I would do if I was standing next to Wayne Rooney in the tunnel and I really don't know. Playing at somewhere like Old Trafford, in front of 75,000 people, and playing with players like him would be magical."

Tom said the Stourbridge squad are in confident mood ahead of the Wycombe match and are desperate to keep the run going.

The game follows a famous victory over Northampton, who are a league higher than Wycombe.

Hard at work

He said: "It's a game we think we can win. We will go there with a game plan and hopefully stick to it.

"We're on a good run of form, we're very confident."

He added: "I went to Wycombe to watch Wolves a few years ago so it's great to be going back to these grounds to play.

Gary Hackett's team will be backed by 2,000 fans in Buckinghamshire and Tom said the support of the town has been a huge boost to the players.

He said: "It's been great seeing people talking about us on the news. I wouldn't say it has put us on the map because we were already there from what we have done previously but it's helping to get the crowds higher.

"When that goal went in against Northampton, the roar - I had never heard anything like it. It was incredible."
