A hat-trick from striker Massiah McDonald endured Boro made it through to the third qualifying round with a 3-1 victory over The Mariners.

Shields, who boast former Sunderland and Middlesbrough star Julio Arca in their ranks, arrived at ‎Marston Road having won the FA Vase last year.

And with the big following behind them, Kitching was delighted that it was Rangers’ fans who went home with a win.

“Performance-wise we more than deserved the victory,” the boss said.

“They are a very good side and and they moved the ball really well.

“But in the second half we blew them away. We blew them away fitness-wise, ball retention-wise and chances-wise.

“The only slight disappointment is that we haven’t won by a greater margin.

“Their keeper has made some great saves. We’ve missed chances. But Mass (Massiah) has scored a great hat-trick.

“All three goals were good goals and good moves.

“Over the 90 minutes we thoroughly deserved it and I think that is the best we have played this season.

“It was a big crowd, a big gate. We’re pleased with the numbers that came through and backed us because we knew South Shields would bring a few.

“And I think we sent everyone home pleased because some of the football we played, particularly in the second half, was superb.”
