Rangers yet to discuss new deal for Danny Quinn

Stafford Rangers have yet to discuss putting Danny Quinn on a contract despite the striker's reputation growing through his goal haul.

Quinn has 20 in all competitions after his second hat-trick of the season in Tuesday night's 4-2 Evo-Stik Northern Premier League win at home to AFC Flyde.

But the summer signing is still on non-contract forms, allowing any club permission to speak to the player about a move after an official seven-day approach.

Strike partner and fellow Tuesday goalscorer Karl Ashton arrived last month on contract, while Oliver Davies and Sean Kinsella are also on deals.

Kinsella missed the first three months of the season after breaking his ankle playing football with friends and is still working his way back to his best form.

That reminded the club how risky binding contracts can be and an improved deal for Quinn may not be financially feasible, assistant boss Dorian Garner warned.

He said: "Sean is still nowhere near yet, I think it's going to be 12 months before he's anywhere near where he was before his injury.

"He warranted his contract but, to earn another one, you have got to sustain that quality and, sometimes, players don't do that.

"It took us a while to get Ashton and it wasn't easy but I think our fans are starting to realise what a good player he is.

"Danny has got 20 goals before Christmas and, at any level of football, that isn't bad and his record this season speaks for itself.

"There's been no talk of a contract for him, at this time, it's a big commitment and we can't always expect to keep our better players.

"It's a vicious circle and what supporters have got to understand is that players on contract cost money, which has to come from them.

"You can't expect the directors to keep putting their hands in their pockets, we need people through the turnstiles to put money in the coffers.

"It would give us the opportunity to build a better team, I would like the people of Stafford to read that and we will see if anything happens."

Garner has taken charge of the last two games with manager Greg Clowes absent through illness, but the Rangers boss is "on the mend."

Clowes could even be back for training tonight and is hoping to be back in the dugout for Saturday's league trip to Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Garner said: "He's on the mend and he should be OK for Saturday. Hopefully, he will be at training tonight. I know Greg fronts it but we do it together.

"I don't mind taking a backward seat. From day one at Alsager to Newcastle Town and now Stafford, everything is done jointly.

"That's in the sense of team selection, tactics, formation and that sort of thing."
