Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today revealed midfielder Kevin Street asked to leave Marston Road in search of first-team football.

The former Crewe and Shrewsbury player was released at the end of last week to join Kidsgrove Atheltic, while Dean Clarke was also let go.

Clarke had raised the ire of boss Clowes by accidentally getting himself FA Cup-tied by turning out in a game for Wolverhampton Casuals.

But the Rangers chief insists the decision with Street was solely down to the player who, at age 34, wants to start games more regularly.

Street was in his second spell at the club and even had a stint as joint caretaker boss with Neil Grayson in 2008, after Phil Robinson resigned.

Clowes brought him back to Rangers after taking over the hot-seat last summer and is full of admiration for the experienced campaigner.

He said: "Kevin had been sitting on the bench and playing his little cameo roles and, for me, that's what his contribution would be.

"First and foremost, I want to mention that nobody has more respect for Kevin than me, both as a footballer and as a gentleman.

"But he wants to play week in, week out and I can't give him that, so he's gone to Kidsgrove and I wish him all of the best.

"I have a lot of time for Kevin and he wasn't forced out, he asked to move on. He's certainly never let me down."
