Stafford Rangers boss Greg Clowes is "toying with the idea" of trying out Jimmy Turner as a winger in their pre-season friendly at Shepshed Dynamo.

Peter Heler, last season's first choice on the right, is suspended for the first two games of the new Evo-Stik Northern Premier League campaign.

And Turner's efforts as an attacking right-back since joining the club from Chasetown this summer has left an impression on the Rangers chief.

Clowes still has right wingers Dean Clarke and Grant Jeffries on trial at Marston Road and both are set to travel to Leicestershire. on Saturday.

But the manager, who has Simon Everall back from holiday, could opt to turn to Turner with the season opener at Kendal three weeks away.

He said: "We are toying with the idea of Jimmy playing on the right wing, because he clearly enjoys marauding down that flank.

"He's certainly got the fitness levels to do it so that's, possibly, something we are going to have a look at in these games.

"Luke George can play at right-back and you have also got Alex Forde, who has played in that position and did very well."

Rangers walloped Alsager 5-1 on Tuesday and go to play a Dynamo side just relegated to the same level of the non-pyramid.

But their hosts were in the Evo-Stik NPL Division One South for 16 years before going down to the United Counties League Premier Division.

Clowes said: "Winning is a great habit to have and I want to go into the first game of the season with confidence.

"Arguably, our biggest pre-season games to come will be against Port Vale, Llandudno and Kidsgrove.

"That said, I expect a sterner test at Shepshed than we had at Alsager on Tuesday night, so I want us to kick on.

"They both play at the same level but Shepshed have just been relegated and were at that level for quite a while."
