Stafford Rangers should be able to call on a further eight players for Saturday's friendly at Stone Dominoes after thumping Rocester in their first pre-season match.

Rangers ran out 5-0 winners at Hillsfield last night, Chris Morris scoring with a shot inside the box before going off after a clash of heads.

Then came a super sub show from new-boy Simon Everall, who climbed off the bench at half-time to net all four of the other goals after the break.

The former Nantwich striker has penned non-contract forms at Marston Road and was on board for next season before kick-off last night.

Manager Greg Clowes said: "Simon had already signed and what he did last night didn't surprise me at all.

"He's not just a box man, he can take people on and he has a lot of pace."

On Saturday, winger Peter Heler and captain Michael Carr will be in the reckoning from last season's squad.

Ex-Rangers Christian Dacres, who has signed a provisional deal, and trailist Jemiah Richards will also figure in the match.

Then there's winger Stuart Ellis and Crewe-based midfielder Liam Prince, last of Market Drayton and Winsford respectively.

Released Port Vale apprentice Grant Jeffries, 18, and right-back Ashley Edwards will also get the chance to earn deals.

But Clowes will first cast his eye over them in training tomorrow.

He said: "There are a few players who didn't play last night as they have not put enough training sessions in yet.

"I will look at them against Stone and, after that, I will have seen them all having a run through.

"That's on the understanding that they train tomorrow night, the lads have been with us since we started back.

"The players who didn't get any minutes last night will also figure."

With Carr absent last night, Liam Walshe skippered the side but Clowes insists he wants a number of captains in his side next season.

He said: "You look at that squad on paper and it ticks the boxes, but are they going to tick the boxes with performances?

"I think what we will have is lads who will point fingers. There was perhaps people were getting away with things last season.

"There are some lads in there who are not going to be happy at seeing people stroll around and not be at it.

"I can only pick one captain in name, but I want to have four or five captains on that pitch next season.

"And there are some pretty strong personalities in there."
