Tributes to former Rushall Olympic reserve boss Kevin McCorry
Former Rushall Olympic reserve team manager Kevin McCorry has died, the club has confirmed.
McCorry first came to prominence at Dales Lane during the 2003/04 campaign when he took over the running of the reserve side from Terry Bushell.
His wife Hazel then joined him in the running of the team by becoming secretary for the Pics’ second string.
McCorry took charge of 147 games, with a record of 79 victories, 21 draws and 47 defeats before moving on to pastures new in 2007.
But his greatest achievement was arguably unearthing striker Tyrone Barnett – one of the Pics’ greatest ever prospects.
Barnett linked up with Rushall during the 2003/04 campaign as a raw 17-year-old after being spotted playing for Great Barr Celtic Holy Name.
His talent was nurtured by McCorry and he was promoted to the first team where he played under manager and chairman John Allen. After leaving the Pics in 2007, Barnett went on to have spells in the Football League with Peterborough, Ipswich and Shrewsbury.
A statement on the Rushall Olympic website said: “Kevin could certainly spot a good young player when he saw one and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him. Rest in peace Kevin.”
McCorry’s funeral will take place at Sandwell Crematorium on March 29 with donations going to Macmillan Cancer Support.
