Kidderminster Harriers still on for title race

Kidderminster Harriers ensured an extension to their season with a comfortable 4-1 win over relegated Altrincham and cut the deficit to league leaders AFC Fylde to four points.

With just two games to play, Harriers have an outside chance of pipping the long-time leaders but Harriers' director of coaching Matt Gardiner was adamant the management were focussed only on the next game despite achieving a play-off spot.

"It's great that we're there and we now just want to focus on the next performance," he said. "We have got to make sure we finish as high as we can."

On the victory over Altrincham, Gardiner praised the efforts of the home team: "We knew it was going to be tough and credit to Altrincham, they are already relegated but there are a lot of things they are looking at for next season and they made it very difficult. We had to go and take the game to them – at half-time we tweaked a few things and credit to our players for carrying that out."

Harriers knew a victory would keep alive their promotion hopes and they received the ideal start, James McQuilkin firing a dipping 30-yard free-kick over the despairing Stuart Tomlinson to give the visitors a seventh-minute lead.

Despite having the bulk of possession, with seven minutes to go to the interval Altrincham surprisingly drew level through Damian Reeves.

However, Harriers pressure eventually paid off when Jordan Tunnicliffe glanced a McQuilkin corner goalwards and Joe Ironside swivelled to crash the ball into the roof of the net on 51 minutes.

Substitutes Andre Brown and Mani Sonoupe finished the game as a contest inside the final quarter of an hour.
