Steve Burr: 'Didn't feel right' to leave Kidderminster Harriers
Steve Burr today claimed the prospect of leaving Kidderminster Harriers for Forest Green Rovers 'never felt right'.
And he revealed he called Harriers chairman Mark Serrell yesterday morning, immediately after holding talks with Rovers officials, to confirm he would be staying with Harriers.
Burr resumed his duties at Aggborough yesterday afternoon, bringing an end to days of uncertainty.
The 50-year-old, who was granted permission to talk to the Gloucestershire club about their vacant managerial post last week, says he never got round to discussing money with Forest Green chairman Dale Vince and was not offered the job.
"When I was told by Kidderminster they had given me permission to talk to Forest Green I thought, well, let's see what they have got to say," said Burr.
"But it did not feel right to me and from the time I was told about their interest I never got too excited.
"As soon as I walked out of the meeting there I rang Mark (Serrell) and said: "Look, I want to stay and try and win something with Kidderminster'.
"Forest Green are a club with a big budget but it never felt right. We never got to the stage of talking about money. I made it clear to myself this was not right."
The news Burr had been given permission to talk with Rovers came as a shock with Harriers currently second in the Skrill Conference, while their rivals are 15th.
Burr was absent from Saturday's 1-0 defeat at Barnet but is now busy preparing for Saturday's FA Cup first-round clash with Sutton United at Aggborough.
"It was important for me and everyone connected with the club to make the decision," he said.
Serrell said everyone at the club was delighted with Burr's decision.
"A lot has been made of it which I think shouldn't have been made of it," he said.
"We did what we thought was right and we never wanted Steve to leave the club. It's been difficult for everyone involved but now it is out of the way."
