Harriers' Lee Vaughan condems Stockport fans
Kidderminster Harriers were today trying to focus on football after Stockport fans were condemned as a "disgrace" following a day of shame at Aggborough.
Harriers defender Lee Vaughan and County captain Sean Newton were hit by pitch-invading supporters in ugly scenes sparked by Anthony Malbon's 50th-minute opener in the 4-0 win.
Victory was annulled by Mansfield's 1-0 win over Wrexham which clinched the Stags the Blue Square Premier title.
It sent Harriers into a two-legged play-off semi-final against Wrexham, starting in north Wales tomorrow night.
Harriers are waiting to assess the fall-out from the 30-minute delay caused by a small group of Stockport fans.
And they were criticised by Vaughan, who was caught up in the melee.
He said: "I pulled one of the Stockport players away and a lad came on and hit me from behind," said Vaughan.
"If I'm being totally honest, their fans are an absolute disgrace. I'm pleased they are going down and I hope they go down again.
"My son was there on Saturday and he had to witness that. Coming on to the pitch and assaulting someone oversteps the mark and when my kids and family are there, it's not nice."
Harriers' record Conference crowd – a capacity 6,433 – surpassed the 6,250 attendance when they took on title rivals Rushden and Diamonds in the 1999-00 season.
But it was a game Kidderminster chose to stage without policing until they were forced to call in officers to control the troublemakers.
However, chairman Mark Serrell was standing by his club's planning for the game.
He said: "Intelligence from Stockport going into the game was that there was no substantial risk of trouble – these people are experts in their field and gather that information well.
"Unfortunately, you cannot legislate for the mentality of a very, very small minority."
Manager Steve Burr is eager to get his men focused on their second chance of promotion after such an impressive end to the season.
Burr said: "We couldn't have done any more against Stockport. What it does is put us in good heart for tomorrow."
