Kidderminster Harriers released former Villa and England midfielder Lee Hendrie in time for him to sign and figure for new club Chasetown.

While Harriers were churning out a goalless draw at Tamworth last night, Hendrie played for the Scholars in their 1-1 draw at home to Matlock.

It was his first-ever appearance in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, adding to his Blue Square Premier bow for Harriers in November.

The 34-year-old was only registered that day after Harriers, responding to Chasetown's approach, agreed to waive the seven-day rule.

Despite his non-contract status, Hendrie was one of the highest earners at Aggborough and was allowed to leave to balance the books.

Now comes a second spell in part-time football this season after turning out for Daventry in October, before joining Harriers a month later.

Hendrie made his last appearance as a late substitute at AFC Telford last Tuesday night and was left out of Saturday's 4-1 win at Braintree.

Harriers chairman Mark Serrell today thanked the one-cap England international for his contribution during his 15 appearances for the club.

But, after signing four new players in the January transfer window, Serrell admitted there was a need for cost-cutting.

He said: "Lee made a tremendous contribution whilst here both on and off the pitch and was the complete professional.

"But, with the comings and goings of the last couple of months and the size of the squad, we felt it was a move that needed to be made."
