The Scholars had valiantly fought back to earn this replay on Saturday, but perhaps wish they hadn’t as Trinity put them to the sword in an 8-2 drubbing.

Gainsborough were three goals to the good inside 20 minutes last night – Ross Hannah, Ashley Worsfold and Shane Clarke all on target for the hosts.

Though there was a let-up for almost half an hour, the floodgates opened from the 49th minute with Worsfold, Simon Russell, Alex Byrne, Liam King and an own goal making it 8-0.

Chasetown did give their suffering supporters something to cheer about in the closing stages as they managed a pair of consolation goals through George Cater and Jake Lovatt.

Attention must now turn to rectifying their winless start to the league season.
