The hosts came back strongly and Will Whieldon gave Chasetown the lead on 30 minutes.

The loose ball fell to the feet of the Chase number 10 and his shot squirmed under keeper Gill and narrowly crossed the line.

Chase striker Muzzy Nduna almost doubled the lead with a near post shot superbly pushed aside by Gill.

Midway through the half, Tom Urwin was a whisker away from 2-0 with a sliced shot off target.

Then within a minute, Newcastle broke quickly and Aaron Bott was quickest to the ball and prodded beyond the advancing Pond from outside the area.

Pond then made a superb double to deny Sam Wilson and Bott.

Chances were thick and fast with home winger George Cater striking the post with an effort that beat Gill.

In swirling winds, Pond almost gave Chasetown a bizarre winner.

His free kick from the halfway line saw Gill scurry back to claw out the ball.
