Kidderminster 1 York City 3: Report

Kidderminster Harriers’ dramatic slump in fortunes continued when they tumbled to a 3-1 defeat against their National League North rivals York City in the third qualifying round of the Buildbase FA Trophy at Aggborough.

It was another bitterly disappointing result for manager Neil MacFarlane’s men who have now lost their last four home games in which they have let in 13 goals.

The Minstermen picked up £5,000 in prize-money for their well earned victory which they achieved thanks to goals from Jordan Burrow (2) and Lewis Hawkins.

Harriers netted a consolation goal through Lee Vaughan, but it was too little too late.

Kidderminster, who like York are former FA Trophy winners, made a number of changes from the side which crashed to a grim 4-0 home league defeat against Chorley seven days earlier with front-runner Kane Richards coming in for his first competition start for the club.

Back in the starting line-up was Ryan Johnson with ex-York campaigner Ashley Chambers taking over the captaincy from Jimmy O’Connor who was ruled out with a calf injury. Defender Sam Austin also returned in place of Joel Taylor.

Midfielder Russ Penn, who rejoined Harriers earlier this month on a free transfer from York, lined up against his former team-mates while Aggborough duo Joe Ironside and Kennedy Digie were ineligible to play following their recent loan move to Bootham Crescent.

Harriers, who knocked the Minstermen out of the competition last season with a home 2-1 win in the first round proper, fell behind after only 90 seconds when Hawkins set up the opportunity for visiting skipper Burrow to slot the ball past goalkeeper Brandon Hall.

It was the perfect start for York who then went close with a fierce free kick by Kallum Griffiths which whizzed just over the bar.

Harriers responded with a promising raid which ended with a cross from Chambers finding Richards whose header from ten yards was well saved by former Aggborough goalkeeper Adam Bartlett.

At the other end Alex Bray broke through the home rear-guard to fire in a shot which rebounded to safety off Hall’s legs.

York, however, made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute when Hawkins rammed the ball home from close range following a cross from Bray.

Ed Williams, who scored twice when Harriers won 3-0 in a league match at Bootham Crescent earlier in the season, was foiled just after the half hour mark when he had a powerful shot well saved by Bartlett.

A couple of minutes later he had another effort flash just over the bar before setting up a good chance for Chambers who was denied by Bartlett.

Harriers started the second half on the front foot and Bartlett was called on twice inside the opening five minutes to save efforts from Billy Daniels and Williams.

York, however, stretched their lead in the 51st minute when Burrow blasted home a penalty which had been awarded when Fraser Horsfall fouled Bray just inside the box.

Stunned Harriers pulled a goal back on 66 minutes when Vaughan drilled the ball in after Bartlett had beaten out a shot from Austin.

They had a chance to score again in the 89th minute when they were awarded a penalty after Bray had fouled Richards, but Williams’ spot kick was well saved by Bartlett.
