Whitby Town 2 Rushall Olympic 3 - Report
A superb second half comeback gave Rushall Olympic all three points against Whitby Town on a wet evening at the Turnbull Ground this evening.
The Pics came close to taking the lead in the 11th minute thanks to a mix up in the Whitby defence. Bradley Maslen-Jones was quickest to react, taking the ball towards forward before opening his body up and shooting across goal. The home keeper Jack Norton did brilliantly to save and keep the score goalless.
Rushall keeper Matthew Hill was first called into action after 23 minutes when the ball was fed into Junior Mondal just inside the box. The Seasiders forward got a shot away on the turn but it was straight at Hill and he held comfortably.
Whitby took the lead on 34 minutes, after Mondal found Lewis Maloney inside the area. The striker played a neat one-two with Kyle Fryatt before applying the finish and smashing past the helpless Hill.
The home side should have been 2-0 up after 41 minutes when Anthony Hume somehow missed an open goal from the edge of the box. A long Callum Patton ball upfield bounced over Hill but Hume could only fire wide with the goal at his mercy.
The Pics nearly grabbed an equaliser on the stroke of half time when the Whitby defence was caught out by a quick throw in. Lewis Archer had the pace to get into a good position one on one with keeper Norton, but his shot from a narrow angle hit the side netting.
Whitby's lead was doubled early in the second half when Kyle Fryatt nodded home on 48 minutes. Seasiders full back Callum Martin whipped in a deep cross to the unmarked Fryatt at the back post, whose diving header hit both posts before crossing the line.
Rushall pulled a goal back on 55 minutes courtesy of Gurjit Singh. Singh took aim with a curled effort that was just well placed enough to find the back of the net despite Norton getting an outstretched hand to the ball.
The equaliser came on 64 minutes thanks to another Joe Hull header. Richard Brodie went close moments earlier when his effort was turned wide by Norton, but Hull got up highest to head home from the resulting corner.
The comeback was completed barely a minute later when Danny Waldron made the most of some sloppy Whitby defending to pounce on a loose ball in the box. The Pics man calmly slotted home to give the visitors the lead.
It was another missed open goal for Whitby after 85 minutes. This time the ball fell quickly to Mondal after a mix up between keeper Hill and his defence, but the pacy front man shot wide to ensure the three points came back to Rushall.
