Chasetown volunteers pitch-in to pass inspection
Chasetown's home match with Romulus will go ahead this afternoon thanks to the dedicated work of volunteers who answered the club's call for help this morning.
The prospect of play looked highly unlikely following torrential overnight rain that had left parts of the playing surface completely saturated.
But a team of 12 helpers, with garden forks in hand, managed to drain enough water for the Scholars to pass their pitch inspection at 1pm this afternoon.
The match is the only fixture in the Evo-Stik South division going ahead.
Chairman Mike Joiner praised the efforts of everyone at the club.
"We were aware of the weather yesterday and arranged to get down at about 8.30am," he said.
"The pitch was waterlogged and it was still chucking it down this morning.
"I said all we can do is get the referee to carry out a pitch inspection, you can't just call a match off.
"We started looking at it and thought it could be playable if we worked at it. It's been achieved thanks to the help of the modern technology of emailing and Twitter.
"We had 15 plus people all over the pitch and when the referee arrived he declared it safe to play on."
Stafford Rangers' game away at Stourbridge was among the fixtures to be called off, as well as Hednesford Town's home match with Rushall Olympic.
Credit to everyone involved at Chasetown who made the impossible, possible!
