Stourbridge climbed back into the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League play-off places after a deserved 2-0 win over strugglers Stamford.

The Glassboys made all the running in the first-half, but had to wait until the 35th minute before taking the lead.

Livewire winger Chris Lait cut inside and delivered a delightful curling shot which flew past Stamford goalkeeper Paul Bastock.

By that stage, Stourbridge had carved out all the best chances, George Bowerman going close when his shot was blocked by Bastock.

Bowerman then blazed over the crossbar, following a lovely four-man move that pulled Stamford's defence apart.

Stamford's goal continued to lead a charmed life after the break, Bastock managing to punch over the crossbar following a Sean Geddes free-kick.

Striker Karl Hawley and partner Justin Richards both blazed wide when well-placed. Stourbridge had to wait until the 87th minute before they finally put the game to bed.

Richards rifled in a dangerous cross which Bastock couldn't hold and the lurking Ashley Vincent, who had replaced Bowerman, made no mistake from the second attempt.

Stourbridge should have added further goals late on, especially when leading marksman Hawley found himself in the clear following a Stamford corner, but Bastock raced out of his area to clear.
