The Pics confirmed yesterday boss Kitching and assistant Nick Amos will depart following Monday's Walsall Senior Cup final with Chasetown.

Speaking for the first time since the announcement, Kitching says he felt it was the right time to move on after five years in charge, admitting his reign was starting to go stale.

"I have just decided over the last couple of weeks that I personally need a fresh challenge, something new to get my teeth into," he said.

"I think perhaps the club now needs a different voice in the changing room too. I wanted to make sure I left the club in a good situation and this just feels like the right time to go."

Kitching knows he is leaving with his head held high after five years which saw promotion to the Evo-Stik Premier Division and several play-off near misses.

But he added: "There has been a lot of effort in the past 12 or 18 months to get into the play-offs and just missing out this season hurt us both."

"We were desperate to make it this season and the thought of going again in the summer was one we maybe didn't relish.

"We are both very ambitious and want to manage at the highest possible level.

"There is maybe a case to be made that as a management duo we had taken the club as far as we can. I've no doubt we could have got them promoted but maybe things had gone a little bit stale."
