It's official Stourbridge! Glassboys are kings of the FA Cup
Stourbridge can rightly lay claim to having been the current decade's kings of the Cup.
The Glassboys have made history and broken records during the past eight seasons yet only a closer inspection of the record books reveals the extent of their achievements.
Since 2009, no other club in the country has won more ties in the competition than Stour. Their current tally stands at 28 and can only be surpassed by Chelsea or Arsenal if either of the Premier League giants were to win the Cup this season.
Gary Hackett's men are already the lowest-ranked team left in the competition – a mark they have achieved on three occasions over recent years.
Victory tomorrow would, meanwhile, see them join an elite group of five clubs who have won seven or more FA Cup ties in a single season. The others are Brighton & Hove Albion (eight ties in 1932/33), New Brighton (seven in 1956/57), Blyth Spartans (eight in 1977/78), Whitley Bay (seven in 1989/90) and Chasetown (seven in 2007/08).
What makes Stour's recent achievements all the more remarkable is the fact it took them 133 years to qualify for the first round proper before finally making it in 2009. Though they were knocked out by Walsall on that occasion, they have progressed to at least the second round in four of the last six seasons and knocked out six higher-ranked opponents.
"You do pinch yourself, to see how far you have come," said Hackett, reflecting on their achievements. "I still remember winning at Buxton to reach the first round in 2009.
"Since then we have had a lot of exciting times and some wonderful occasions."
