BBC overlook Stourbridge FC's FA Cup tie against Northampton Town

Disappointed officials and supporters at Stourbridge FC have expressed dismay over the decision not to screen live on TV next month's FA Cup showdown with Northampton Town.

The non-league Glassboys have begun preparations for one of the biggest days in their 140-year history when the League One Cobblers visit the War Memorial Ground on Sunday, December 4, for a second-round tie.

But the mouth-watering clash will not be broadcast live, rights holders BT Sport and the BBC both chose to overlook it – despite Stourbridge now being one of the lowest-ranked clubs left in the competition.

Ties at Macclesfield, Curzon Ashton and Lincoln City will instead be screened, with the broadcasters having made their choices before Stourbridge defeated Whitehawk 3-0 in Monday's first-round replay.

The decision also carries financial implications, with the Black Country club missing out on a £68,000 broadcast fee they would have received had the match been screened live.

It will instead receive the lower sum of £12,500, with their match one of eight chosen as part of the BBC's Final Score programme on the Sunday afternoon of second round weekend.

Stourbridge chairman Andy Pountney said:"We're delighted to have got this far but I'm disappointed and a little surprised we weren't chosen as a live game.

"We are one of the lowest-ranked teams left and have a good record in the competition and the money received for a live game would've made a massive difference."

Former Glassboys player Tony Willetts, 76, said:"I'm disappointed. It would've meant extra money for Stourbridge to thrive on."

A crowd of 1,993 watched Monday's replay win and capacity for the Northampton is expected to be around the 2,600-mark.

The club, managed by Gary Hackett, has been among the most successful FA Cup teams in non-league football over the past decade.

A BBC spokesman said: "There are a combination of factors which determine the live TV picks. Stourbridge will feature in the FA Cup Final Score programme on December 4."
