Rushall bounce back after Darren Bent's visit

Rushall Olympic secured a safe passage through to the final of the Staffordshire Senior Cup with a 2-0 win over Leek Town at Dales Lane.

The Pics started off brightly and Jack Duggan's header from Jordan Fitzpatrick's corner was held by Chris Martin, before Fitzpatrick couldn't quite stretch to tap in an Andre Brown cross.

But Rushall weren't to be denied much longer, as Fitzpatrick got to the byline and cut the ball back for Andre Brown to smash in from close range just five minutes into the game.

The hosts doubled their lead in superb style 17 minutes later with a fine team goal finished off by Alex Reid, after a neat one-two with Jamie Spencer.

Spencer himself went close with a blocked shot as Leek rarely threatened, apart from Lee Cropper's weak shot from distance.

In the second-half, Brown saw a shot superbly tipped around the post by Martin. Dan Shelley went through in a rare Town attack, but lacked conviction with his shot.

Kyle Diskin almost caught out Dean Coleman with a quick free-kick, but the Pics goalkeeper turned the ball away as his side eased through to an April 27 final against Kidsgrove Athletic at Vale Park.

But, by far, the most famous face at Rushall this week was Darren Bent, the former England and Villa striker paying an Easter visit.

The 32-year-old, who now plies his trade at Derby County, watched brother-in-law Andre Gonzales turn out for Sutton Coldfield Town in the Evo-Stik League Premier Division.

Bent went home happy, after Sutton edged a tight encounter with the Pics by a single goal.

A prolific striker for Tottenham, Sunderland and Villa – among other – Bent earned 13 caps for his country, scoring four goals.
