Stourbridge manager Gary Hackett felt his team just about deserved to edge the FA Trophy game in a tight contest ahead of a big week for his club.
The opening stages of the local derby were understandably nervy, but the game came to life after 22 minutes.
Stourbridge's Chris Lait crossed for Matt Dodd whose header hit the bar. The teams went in level at half-time after two goals in a six-minute spell.
Stourbridge led when influential former Yeltz midfielder Tom Tonks played a neat interchange with Dodd.
He picked out the unmarked Stuart Pierpoint and he smashed a brilliant 28th-minute finish into the top corner from 15 yards.
But the lead proved short-lived as Halesowen equalised after 34 minutes, when Reece Hales played a neat dummy.
That allowed Keyon Reffell to advance with pace and hit a low cross for Aaron Daniels to turn home with perfect timing.
The second half developed into a battle of attrition as each side strived to gain control with a 73rd-minute penalty appeal from Halesowen's Reffell turned down.
The Glassboys struck their 79th-minute winner when Karl Hawley glanced home a close-range header off the underside of the crossbar, after Justin Richards whipped across a free-kick from the left.
Reffell missed a late opportunity to level for the Yeltz, when he sliced wide from 10 yards.
