Villa host the French club in Tuesday’s quarter-final second leg with Emery telling his players they must believe they can overturn a 3-1 deficit.

The Spaniard has experience of coming back from two goals down in a European tie, having achieved the feat with both Sevilla and Arsenal.

Emery was also in charge of PSG when they blew a 4-0 lead against Barcelona three years later.

But he believes those moments count for nothing as his Villa team attempt what would be one of the club’s finest ever results.

Emery said: “Now it's something different. We want to write here the history with Aston Villa. Last year in the Conference League and this year in the Champions League and hopefully for a long time in Europe.

“Because my experiences before were different, sometimes losing away and winning at home, sometimes losing at home and winning away.

“But I'm not going to remind the players of those experiences. My idea and my every word with the players is sending the message how we are doing this way and how we are getting experiences together here with Aston Villa.

“With the players we are, with the experiences we are adding in our back last year and this year.

“With the combination we have with our players mentally and as well tactically to play, being so demanding in our process to get opportunities and believing to beat tomorrow PSG.”

Villa will train on Monday evening and Emery, who has made 20 changes for the club’s last three fixtures, confirmed he is yet to finally decide on his starting XI.

The boss, meanwhile, claimed it was “not very relevant” PSG did not play at the weekend, after the French FA agreed to postpone their match with Nantes.

Villa won 3-0 away at Southampton as their hectic fixture schedule continued but Emery said: “We have the habit to play a lot of matches in a row, three matches per week.

“As well they (PSG) have this habit and they are ready to play. They rested but for me it is not very relevant.”

Emery continued: Of course I have my idea in my mind but I don't have my idea in my mind for the starting eleven.

“I have my idea, a plan, a plan overall, 90 minutes or extra time or penalty shoot with the match tomorrow.

“We are preparing each game, we are preparing with every player. Everybody has to know tomorrow their task on the field. They have to understand as well how to manage emotionally the match.”
