The Colombia international is facing a three-match ban after being dismissed in the 32nd minute for what referee Anthony Taylor deemed a deliberate stamp on defender Fabian Schar.

Emery felt it was “completely not” a red card and felt VAR Graham Scott should have requested the on-field official consult the pitchside monitor before making a final decision.

As things stand, Duran is set to miss matches against Brighton, Leicester and Everton.

Asked if Villa intended to appeal, Emery replied: “Of course, of course, of course. Three matches now out for this red card? Wow. It is hard to accept.

“You can watch the movie and it was not clear. Maybe it was because it was Jhon Duran because of his reputation.

“He was asking so quick: ‘Sorry, sorry’. It was not really doing one action with the intention to kick him.

“For me, it is completely not (a red card). I can understand why another team is asking for it. But VAR please and confirm it.

“I think he did not kick him on purpose. I think that. Of course we are going to appeal it and hopefully it is not three matches because it is a very high punishment for this action.”

Duran was not the only man shown a red card, with both Villa lead analyst Victor Manas and Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall dismissed for what broadcaster Amazon Prime reported as a “20-man melee” in the tunnel at half-time.

Asked about that description afterward, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe replied: “It is probably not far off.

“What I saw was 17 or 18 people trying to calm it down. It is not what you want to see but sometimes you have to stand up and protect yourself.”

Howe, meanwhile, said he thought Duran’s red card had been “maybe harsh”.

He continued: “I was a little bit surprised the red card came out.”
