The right-back Aston Villa star was at Alexandra Palace to see 17-year-old sensation Littler hit a tournament record 140.91 set average to beat Ryan Meikle in the second round of the PDC world championships.

Littler, who announced his presence on the global stage by reaching the final of last year’s competition, began slowly before racing through the gears, missing out on a nine-darter by millimetres though he was later overcome by emotion and had to cut short his on-stage interview.

He later told a news conference: "It was probably the toughest game I've ever played. I had to fight until the end.

"As soon as the question came on stage and then boom, the tears came. It was just a bit too much to speak on stage.

"It is the worst game I have played. I have never felt anything like that tonight."

Matty Cash, a long-time darts fan, played earlier in the day as Villa beat reigning champions City 2-1 at Villa Park. Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers got the goals as Unai Emery’s team won for the fourth time in five matches in all competitions.
