Referee Michael Salisbury called players off the pitch in the 41st minutes “for their safety” after it was spotted near the roof of the Chapel End at St Mary’s Stadium.

Villa had been about to take a free-kick, 25 yards from the home goal, when the official called over both captains and the teams departed.

The match resumed around 10 minutes later after the drone disappeared.
