The skipper has suffered a setback with the problem which has seen him miss the club’s last seven Premier League matches is now likely to be out until the start of May.

Grealish had returned to training and was due to feature in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Fulham before pulling out 24 hours before.

Boss Dean Smith said: ”Jack had a setback last week. Myself and Jack were probably a little too optimistic trying to get him back.

“He wanted to be back for the Tottenham game (March 21) and we tried to push him for Fulham but he's had a setback which will probably keep him out for a few more weeks. We need to de-load him.”

Smith remains confident Grealish will return before the end of the season with the 25-year-old desperate to secure a place in England’s squad for Euro 2020.

The boss continued: “The good news is that it's not a long-term injury. Jack’s mostly quite calm and we know he'll be back before the end of the season.”

Defender Kortney Hause will be included in Villa’s squad for Saturday’s trip to Liverpool though striker Wesley remains out.
