Emiliano Martinez

Simply sensational and just as well for Villa’s sake. Nine saves, of which at least three were spectacular. Challenging Grealish for player of the season honours.

Superb 9

Matty Cash

Did his best to get forward down the right but wasn’t helped by a rather erratic performance from Bertrand Traore ahead of him. Solid enough defensively. Injury a concern.

Tried 6

Ezri Konsa

Made a number of key tackles and blocks but was also guilty of giving the ball away sloppily at times. Dribbled past by Maupay in the second half. Has played better.

Steady 6

Tyrone Mings

Could be heard urging his team-mates to up their game from the early stages on but the shouting had no effect. Made a key block from Dan Burn in the first half and stayed cool under pressure.

Calming 7

Matt Targett

Guilty of letting Josh Veltman cut inside too easily which resulted in a first-half shot. Otherwise a steady performance in which featured a number of key interventions to help his team.

Alert 7

John McGinn

As usual there was no shortage of effort from the Scot but this was one of those nights when most of what he tried simply didn’t come off. One of several players guilty of losing possession cheaply.

Frustrated 5

Douglas Luiz

Joined his midfield team-mates in making errors but was probably the pick of a pretty average bunch. Looked to get forward when he could and saw a shot deflected wide.

Mixed 6

Bertrand Traore

The Burkina Faso international can be a delight to watch when he is on form. When not in his game, he is immensely frustrating. This was one of the latter performances.

Erratic 5

Ross Barkley

Registered Villa’s only attempt on target with a second-half shot which was easily dealt with by Brighton keeper Robert Sanchez. Otherwise struggled to make any impression as the game passed him by.

Quiet 5

Jack Grealish

Probably made more errors in this match than in the previous 21 combined. A frustrating night summed up when he was booked for pulling back Veltman, having lost control of the ball.

Subdued 5

Ollie Watkins

No shortage of running from the striker as usual but he was well shackled by Lewis Dunk and had virtually nothing in the way of service.

Shackled 5

Substitutes

Ahmed Elmohamady (for Cash, 61) 6, Trezeguet (for Traore, 66) 5, Morgan Sanson (for Barkley, 76) 6. Subs not used: Engels, Nakamba, Ramsey, El Ghazi, Davis, Heaton (gk).
