A national newspaper report claimed the pair were together at a restaurant in London, breaching rules which forbid socialising with other households indoors.

Villa have viewed video footage of the incident and do not see it as sufficiently serious to launch an investigation or fine the pair.

But they are likely to be spoken to by boss Dean Smith, who granted his squad the weekend off following the postponement of Friday’s match with Newcastle.

Reports claimed Barkley, who was celebrating his 27th birthday, hugged and high-fived other diners. Grealish is alleged to have broken guidelines simply by dining indoors with his team-mate.

The pair did not break any rules by travelling to London, which is in tier two, as both live in tier two areas outside Birmingham, currently in tier three.

Grealish last month admitted two counts of careless driving during a previous lockdown breach in March, for which he made a public apology.
