The £28million striker, who grew up a Gunners fan, struck twice in the second half as Dean Smith’s men recorded a hugely impressive 3-0 win.

Watkins, who has now scored six times in seven top flight appearances since joining from Brentford in a big money move, joked: “I’m not sure my grandad or uncle Baz are going to be too happy!

“They are Arsenal fans and I am an Arsenal fan myself - but I’m buzzing. I am sure they will love it really. I am over the moon.”

Last night’s victory Villa’s biggest at Arsenal since 1928, got their season back on track after successive defeats to Leeds and Southampton.

Smith’s men have also beaten Liverpool and Leicester this term and they now sit sixth in the standings.

Watkins added: “I think there is a lot more to come from us. I think you saw it last night, you saw it against Liverpool and at the start of the season once we got our tactics and shape right.”

Villa, who saw John McGinn’s goal after just 45 seconds ruled out by VAR, eventually went in front when Bukayo Saka put through his own net.

Watkins then netted twice in the space of three second half minutes to seal the win.

Smith said: “It’s up there with the Liverpool result, if not better. We just looked so composed.

“We played with such intensity with and without the ball. I thought we looked dangerous whenever we went forward.

“It was a really top performance. We had no doubts we had to be at our best.

“I had no doubts Ollie would score goals at this level. I was always confident he would hit the ground running. He is a young man but he has played a lot of games.”
